FLORIADE 2012 by JAN TAMINIAU: sustainability & design at the world horticultural expo

Under Jan Taminiau’s vision, Mother Nature summoned twelve Dutch fashion creatives to test design by joining the flowery festivities at the Floriade 2012 (World Horticultural Expo). For this edition (held every 10 years in the Netherlands) the master class was assigned to a collection named ‘Nature Extends’, the collection they created challenged new ways of designing, in the end once knowing how to treat and manipulate the materials they could achieve the same surprises that nature experiences.

Associating to each one’s own universe and influenced by Taminiau’s couture collection, the selected designers (from different academies), introduced their sustainable garments guided by the organic power of beauty. Exercising the limitations fashion suppliers have when it comes to environmental responsibility was a challenging road for all designers who had to find the balance between attraction and respect. The program comprised of four workshops including a talk about green fashion by the prestigious Lidewij Edelkoort and feedback-evaluations from different professionals.
