AREA SS2026 by Nicholas Aburn
EXT. NEW YORK CITY. DAY TO NIGHT, DAY TONIGHT, TODAY NIGHT.
New York, an American city. Beautiful, despicable.
A straight ahead sidewalk in a downtown square:
Look at her! She’s going places! Steps beckon, steps believe.
NARRATOR
Get ready with me.
This is the day. And what’s it holding? A promise. A play
button.
NARRATOR (CONT ‘D)
Ok, I’m ready.
Press play. Get your steps in. Steps and the city.
NARRATOR (CONT ‘D)
Ready for what, again?
Steps, girl.
NARRATOR (CONT ‘D)
What if–
Girl. The next step is steps.
NARRATOR (CONT ‘D)
What if I never stop getting ready?
What if I want to be surprised?
What if gum on the sidewalk spells
out Something Special? What if my
coffee is in a martini glass? What
if I’m the luckiest woman alive,
and alive is winning the lottery,
and the lottery is a party tonight?
What if I see her and we remember
each other’s names immediately?
What if I see her and she screams
my name under the lights? What if
my martini is in a coffee cup? What
if I’m everyone I admire and they
are me? What if above the honking
horns we scream I REMEMBER YOU?
What if the confetti never stops
falling? Even if it’s over, I’m
ready.
INT. NEW YORK CITY, THIS VERY MORNING.
