MODEST BAGS: [GEAR3] BY SAEN SS2011
Last March during Seoul Fashion Week FW2010, Korean designer Saen Park approached her handbags as products to be repaired when not even customized. At the beginning of the runway there was a live bag-repair cabin including a handsome bag maker for – GEAR3 by SAEN – delivering an everyday humble product. The handbags on show combined practicality and durability and were far removed from the pretentious aura a handbag exudes these days.
Her works are inspired by mechanical themes, while neutrality and subtlety are always a consideration from the moment she starts designing – industrial manufacturers even supply the fabrics and trimmings (bolts, nuts, polyurethane and cables). I visited her atelier some days before her SS2011 presentation in Seoul and the peace in the air feel unusual. There is a monster around us who has been the spring-summer muse for the transformable collection … I asked the designer her age and she asked me if I wanted it in universal language or in Korean? Further, she explained how to teach the national market the reason to use a bag: – men for example are still carrying their belongings in their pockets. She believes they have to discover the comfort a bag implies.
