Chunky piercings & headbands: RECONSTRUCT SS2018 YEAH
Teaming up as a design collective while studying in fashion school and becoming united force could help lead graduating designers into immediate developments. In some cases, this would help faster and more effectively than the vague social media networks offered when still in the vulnerable position of having no experience aside from a diploma.
The collective RE by RECONSTRUCT helped create this, and their second exposure at Amsterdam Fashion Week was executed perfectly with an obsessive anti-plain product performance. A very loyal follow up to their debut appearance last January, this gave the viewer a professional guarantee: they are not joking around on the runway. They are here to stay.
Contrary to those who think that young designers cannot deliver elaborate, mature constructions, they absolutely did. The models retained a confidential distance, guarded by a black hooded army as a choreographic effect. Last January I tried on a burgundy velvet bomber jacket backstage and felt no different than those of Y/Project of Off-White. Rich, sturdy, wearable and above all real. This time I was tempted to try on their Chuck Taylor couture corset, but never gathered the courage.
The best collective show (excluding duos) at Amsterdam Fashion Week for SS2018 weren’t thinking simply when bringing the rough streets into your closet: cut-out suits, cropped hoodies, and fresh asymmetrical shirts. Bands and straps here and there as if you are entering a powerful, collective sports game somewhere downtown.
In the end, it all seemed reversible, no matter if it was hand drawn or computer animated: it was all still real.
