Title

Dangerous & Divine: the secret of the serpent by AND BEYOND

Now on display at the Afrika Museum in Berg en Dal (NL) is a collection of couture garments, artifacts and contemporary objects exploring and incorporating the meaning and symbolism of the snake across different cultures. AND BEYOND, the Dutch fashion duo best recognized for their abstract prints, are one of the selected designers and provide the most animalistic of the exhibition’s assignment.

Under guest curation of Carlo Wijnands, AND BEYOND’s Jolanda and Brigitte traveled to their 2009 archives when envisioning snakes, revitalizing a print created out of snakes, which now appears underneath a shredded layer of leopard print. The effect is of an aggressive striking couturized python, covered in giant overlapping scales (lower, middle, upper) made of a refined printed fabric used as matelassé. The silhouette changes abruptly, like the mood of a snake, from seductive to sinister. The show also includes pieces from Dutch designers Bas Kosters, Iris van Herpen, Claes Iversen, and British designer Richard Sorger.
