HOUSE OF MATCHING COLORS FW2015: Paula says, “wild love is forever”- isn’t she lovely?
Within the Greater Buenos Aires, “Las Chicas” refers to a band of noisy females who refuse to conform to the stereotype of the “proper woman”. This could aptly apply to the House of Matching Colours who has worked diligently to maintain their youthful credentials . . . They meet in public parks, take boat trips to Tiger (a surreal town from a nearby island), debate during picnics and enjoy hidden beauty. They are always ready for new creative attacks – their recent collection uses metal zips with specific colour treatments as weapons in their skirmishes into unknown territory. When combined with the ton-sur-ton hand coloured leathers, and the decorated hand-painted pastel leather (with real bullets) it becomes an outright assault! “Dios mio, Las Chicas”. Aren’t They Lovely?
HOMC’s sphere of influence extends beyond their assault on the runways; with their made-to-measure hand embroidered wedding dresses being welcomed into churches. Despite the formality this would suggest, their design for the 2012 edition of Hyères Festival included the use waterproof material – according to HOMC, you never know if a wedding will end up in a swimming pool or river!
For head designer Paula Selby Avellaneda – a graduate of The Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp – plurality remains an important aspect of her work. Outside of HOMC, she also runs the PANORAMA store located in front of the local zoo in Buenos Aires Palermo. Working with two other partners, her store curates other young designers – accompanied by Lulu, Luisa, Sara, Angeles, Helena, Alina, Nat, Nicole, Cindy, etc, etc. and of course, Paula!
